Become a qualified Hairdresser

No, you do not need Grade 12 to study this course. You just need a minimum of Grade 9 and be at least 16 years old.

We currently offer this as a three-year full-time programme. The first 18 months is spent on campus, where you will receive integrated theory and practical training. After that, you will spend another 18 months in the workplace, gaining valuable on-the-job experience.

With this qualification, you can work anywhere in South Africa or even on a cruise ship. You can work for an established hair salon or start your own business once you are qualified.

Internationally, this qualification’s recognition depends on each country’s qualification framework and trade licensing rules. In our experience this qualification will be recognised in some countries, for example in the United Arab Emirates as well as on international cruise ships. In other countries like the UK and Australia you may be required to apply for a skills assessment in order for your qualification to be recognized.

It's always best to check with the county you wish to go to if your qualification will be recognised or if you’ll need to do a skills assessment.

Your course fees include tuition, assessment fees and study material. You will also receive an hair stylist starter kit with all the essential tool and products you need for your practical work—both on campus and in the salon.

There are only two things not included in the course fees: the trade test fees, which you will pay once you’ve completed the three-year programme, and any re-assessments you need to do for theory or practical assessments.

During the course, you will complete several formative assessments (small class tests and assignments) and summative assessments (final module exams). You will also take part in many practical assessments to ensure you gain the hands-on skills needed to be salon-ready.

Yes! The Occupational Certificate: Hairdresser is accredited and certified by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO). Qualitas Career Academy is a registered private skills development provider with the QCTO.

Once you’ve successfully passed your final trade test, you will receive a Trade Test Certificate (also known as your red seal qualification), officially certifying you as a qualified hairdresser. This certificate is issued by the QCTO.

Yes, you can do part-time skill programmes. These are short courses for people who’d like to learn specific hairdresser skills and does not want to do a full qualification
